Week3 Oct 5-9

I met with my preceptor Tuesday Oct 6. The first task that we handled was making rounds on the floor. My preceptor states that she rounds every morning to see all of the employees and attempts to speak with each one. She states that it makes her appear available to the employees and that they feel free to approach her at anytime to discuss their concerns. I noticed that she called all of the employees by their first name. I agree that these actions promote an open door for discussion. All of the employees seemed receptive to the manager's greetings and did carry on a short conversation with her. A few of the employees did voice their concerns about various issues. My preceptor reassured them that she would address their concerns. After making the rounds, my preceptor discussed with me some disciplinary meeting that she had scheduled with some of the employees. One in particular was going to be fired for writing and carrying out orders without a doctor's order. She stated that she was a "good nurse" but she had to stick with protocol. It has to be a difficult position to be in. But, I feel that I would follow the same path. We all know that we have to have a doctor's order for any treatment or medication. There is no room for exception! Overall, I enjoyed my first day with my preceptor. I feel that she is an excellent leader and manager. She is honest and forthcoming with her employees. She adheres to rules even though she feels that she is losing a good employee. I spent 5 hours with my preceptor this week.

  1. It certainly sounds as if you are getting a good clinical experience.

  2. That is a good practice I have learnt from my preceptor, walking around and greeting and chatting and here and there. It makes employees feel free to approach you and discuss their concerns with you. I hope we learn from that practice and let it be part and parcel of our practice

  3. I never noticed it as a "round" on my unit as the nurse. My precept rounds regularly for her shifts and she also wants to be seen as avaiable. Comparing how this was as a manager vs staff nurse was so different. I always thought she was just really curious about how I felt about the unit!! Although I now know she is doing it to make me feel secure, it makes me feel better to know she wants to be seen as avaiable.
